Do You Understand Your True Motive?

motive – noun

1. a reason for doing something.

“police were unable to establish a motive for his murder”
Usually what we want and desire isn’t bad. What we need to consider is WHY we want what we want. What’s the motivation?
Last night I watched Holby City, that’s my show at the moment. It’s the hour a week that I sit (in my case redound on my mini trampet) and watch tv, outside of that I don’t watch tv much. Yesterday was the climax of a story that was very much about Guy Self’s motivation. He’s been wanting this Neo Unit forever! Finally, this dream is happening, he’s made a lot of bad choices along the way for it but finally, he’s made right with his daughter and some things within himself. Now he can (almost/seemingly) have his dream unit built. Then he resigns and gives the money to the hospital!
His motivation was:

  • proving his late mother wrong,
  • trying to please the world and
  • trying to please his daughter.

Once this dream was in his hands. He realised his real motivation was love and acceptance from his daughter and he realised he had it!

It makes me think about my dreams and goals and more so, my motivations!
It’s a good thing to think about. Consider:

  • who is it really for?
  • are you trying to prove anything to anyone?
  • when and how did the desire start?

If it’s all from a good, pure place, go ahead and pursue that dream with all your heart and energy. If there’s other people’s words and expectations involved, dig deeper and deeper until you get to the truth of that thing and deal with it.
Let’s tap into our motivations and ensure our motives and pure!

#WhateverJinx

You know when things are going well, like really well. Something that usually turns bad isn’t, and suddenly it’s going really good and you want to say so. But you don’t. Why? Cause “you might jinx it”
Ever heard that!!
You know what I’m done with Jinx, (whoever that is!) I’m just going to say it anyway.  You should too. Whatever it is, say it out loud!! You can’t control things anyway, so when things are great, say so!

  • Things are great
  • I’m enjoying life
  • This project is going so well
  • I’m on a roll

Go for it!

Do what you can where you are

Dani Johnson says “prosper where you’re planted.”  She talks so much about this and works to changing our attitudes about where we were now.
Initially I couldn’t really understand this but it makes sense!!
In his book “Eat that Frog” Brian talks about a woman who worked hard for years in her job and couldn’t get a promotion. She then focused on the top 3 tasks she does that contribute the most to the company. She met her boss and asked:

  1. Could he delegate all her other tasks to others
  2. She would then focus on these too 3 items
  3. If she double her output would he double her salary

Within 30 days he did, she did then he did!

She doubled her salary in 30 days.
It makes we wonder what we could do right where we are with a different attitude and perspective!
It’s something to think about.
Where I am, as Director of my company. I’m always thinking about;

  • My strengths
  • What I bring
  • What I do that no one else can
  • What I do that brings value
  • What I can delegate
  • What I need to do to improve my Strengths

Some things to think about:

  • What are your strengths?
  • How can you maximize them where you are?
  • What can be delegated?
  • Read this book!

Work Pray Repeat

I walked in the gym on Friday with a t-shirt that said “Run Dance Sleep”. It caught the attention of a Personal Trainer there, we got talking and I ended up having a free PT Session (Score! or not, cause I was quite literally in pain for 3 days straight. Every time I went to sit down one of my daughters would come and give me a hug, it was that serious lol).
I love these 3 word sayings. So today I say;

Work. Pray. Repeat.
I say this because that’s quite literally how I work, live and run my business. Whenever I speak to fellow Christian’s in business I constantly wrap my advice, thoughts and ideas around the statement “but pray about it, God will lead you…”
Is it a get out clause? Yeah, kinda. I trust God with every area of my life. My Pastor once said “make your plans and leave room for God to edit“.
My life is drenched with stories where I’ve had pulls, tugs and whispers of God’s leading in different areas that have brought me to where I am and will take me on to where I’m going next.
So I say again. It may get boring but… there’s power in repetition. Dani Johnson says it’s that “repetition is the mother of skill”. Prayer is powerful so it’s a good thing to repeat.

What God gave you is important

“What God gave you is important”-TD James
You have to believe that what God gave you is important. No matter how small it may seem.
Yesterday I learnt of a company that has been around for 60 years and they make… Scissors, 120 different types. What if that guy said 60 years ago “all I can do is make scissors! That’s so small and insignificant I’ll just go and work for so and so company!”
What you have and what you can do may seem small but it can make a difference.
YOU have to believe what is in you is important.

YOU have to mine yourself like you know there’s gold, diamonds and treasures within you.
Believe and know that what’s inside of you is important and this could be the very THOUGHT that changes your life!
Who knew my love for fashion design would lead me to creating a company that designs and supply’s Clergy Attire to women around the world www.houseofilona.com I had to take a risk on me, I had to believe in me, I had to believe that what God put inside of ME was and still is important.
I have a voice, things come to my mind that I’m pretty sure would help someone out there so;

  • I created a blog
  • I took a chance
  • I write as much as possible
  • I put things out there for others to criticize or be blessed by
  • I believe that what God put inside of me that is important…

Do you believe that for yourself?

This book is a game changer in my productivity

It’s called the 12 Week Year. I highly recommend it. FYI – if you listen to the audio book version speed it up by 1.25x the voice is was little slow for me.
It talks about how we set goals at the beginning of our year (January) loose momentum then we get highly productive towards the end (December) and this ends up being our most productive time.
It suggests breaking your year into 12 weeks instead. This is been a game changer for me. I can plan the weeks in front of me easier then 12 months. I have more perspective, goal are more reachable and I feel like each weeks actions make a significant impact.
One of the things I’ve applied are daily Strategic Blocks – time set aside for high level actions that take time and thought-  and Buffer Blocks -time for emails, social media and the to-do list.
Before applying this method my whole week felt like one big buffer block, just constantly reacting to everything in front of me. Now with my uninterrupted strategic blocks I feel like I’m getting those major actions dealt with and I don’t feel bad about the emails and admin because I know I’ll get to it later. Even my team know they can get to me during buffer blocks and all is working really well.
This is the most productive I’ve felt in a long time. Productive in many areas. I highly recommend this book.

Enjoy the journey don’t endure the journey

I read an email yesterday from a Fitness Bootcamp company I’ve worked with before. They talked about not letting the destination (goal weight) be what you look forward to enjoying but to enjoy the momentum on the way to the goal.

This stuck with me. I thought about keeping the email (empty inbox goals) but I decided to delete it (cause if I filed it I’d probably never read it again anyway – just being honest). Why did I delete it, because I knew the message stuck! (So much so that I’m blogging about it today).

It’s so important to enjoy the journey!

– Enjoy the fact that your mind is changing about yourself and food and you’re exercising everyday
– Enjoy the time you and your fiancé get to spend together planning your wedding day
– Enjoy every positive step you take in the direction of your goal
– Enjoy (insert here, whatever it is you’re doing on the way to where you’re going)

Because the GOAL is what? A score, a day (wedding day), an achievement (weight goal). The joys last for a varied amount of time, a few minutes, a few days, a month… It peaks, then subsides, then what… You move onto the next thing. It can be almost deflating. But if you’ve enjoyed (not endured) the journey, you have become a richer, happier person on your way to your goal.

How bad do you want it?

I’ve wanted to give up so many times!

The year after I stuck with it, I was flooded with business. Most of these brand new clients told me they saw me a year ago! Imagine if I quit!

Is the desire to give up:
1) a sign to change direction or
2) a gut check that’s saying “don’t you dare quit now”.

Just like that story; please don’t quit digging 3 foot from gold!

Products following you everywhere you go online

How do you feel about products following you everywhere you go online?

My hubby hates it! I think it’s great… most of the time. Like today, I checkout a bunch a products; dresses, suits, coats that I was so inspired by and loved. They’re popping up everywhere now and I really don’t mind.

Times when I’m not so keen is when I’m searching for gifts for my teenage godson or a new baby gift, then baby products or tracksuit are following me… not so nice.

I guess I have time for it and I appreciate it because I’m a marketer and trying to learn from what I see and how it makes me and others feel.

What do you think? How do these ads make you feel? Comment below, I’d love to hear.
